Sacramento, CA (February 6, 2012) – In a ceremony on February 6, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) recognized the Sacramento can production facility of Silgan Containers for its significant reduction in electric energy demand.
Yearly electricity demand for the plant’s vacuum system will be reduced by more than half, from approximately 1.1 million kilowatt hours per year to an estimated 514 thousand kWh.
“This is a significant energy savings, and is keeping with Silgan Containers’ commitment to reducing its environmental impact,” said plant manager Jim Moses.
The plant, which manufactures steel cans for food packaging, achieved the savings by investing in a new vacuum system that includes replacing aging vacuum pumps with new higher efficiency ones, and equipping machines with vacuum system shutoff valves for use when not in operation. The vacuum system is used to move cans through the manufacturing process and hold individual cans during specific operations.
Attending the February 6 ceremony at the plant were Moses and Communications Associate Andrea Chase from Silgan Containers; Steve Oliver and John Brain from SMUD; and Jim Banbury and Steve Strah from Air Perfection, which installed the new system.
